At SwensenMusicHouse students and teachers share living space, meals and free time. Students get to hear their teacher rehearse and practice, and can immerse themselves in their own undisturbed practicing in this naturally beautiful setting. They can receive multiple lessons every day but the learning is certainly not limited to the lessons. Inspired, profound and life-changing progress is really possible here!
LESSONS INTENSIVE takes place at SwensenMusicHouse, Vicki and Joey Swensen's idyllic and spacious 15 room Vermont residence (built on 5 acres in 1776!) Students and professionals, violinists, violists, conductors and pre-formed chamber groups are invited to receive as many as three lessons/consultations a day with Joseph Swensen during residencies which can last as little as two days or as long as two months (depending on Dr. Swensen's concert schedule.) Gap year residencies are available in very special cases. Skype audition/interview required. Available from May 1, 2017.
COACHINGS CONFIDENTIAL is intended for both students and professionals. Dr. Swensen will offer completely confidential (or even anonymous) consultation/instruction to violinists, violists, conductors and pre-formed chamber groups at locations determined by his concert schedule or on Skype. Dr. Swensen has served as a confidential coach to some of the worlds most well-known violin soloists, discretely attending their rehearsals or concerts, later offering in-depth consultations. Available immediately.
TOTAL IMMERSION (Conducting and Chamber Music Workshop) takes place from June 8-17, 2017. It is open to musicians and music lovers of all ages and will include private lessons, masterclasses, and chamber music. All participants will study conducting with Joseph Swensen and actually conduct the Total Immersion Ensemble in the Adagietto from Mahler's 5th Symphony and Mozart's Jupiter Symphony. They will also have the opportunity to take part in a variety of chamber music groups. Places are limited to twenty participants.
Conducting master classes will take place every day from 10am to 12 noon and then again from 2pm to 4pm. All participants will play in the Total Immersion Ensemble, taking turns conducting Mahler and Mozart under Dr. Swensen's guidance.
Evenings are non-stop chamber music, often continuing until very late into the night. Participants are encouraged to bring any works they wish to play.
Participants will also have time to pursue their own individual work and pleasures in a truly inspiring and idyllic setting. Swimming in our pristine rivers and hiking in our green mountains are among the favorite local summer activities.
The true focal point of our house is a museum piece, masterly refurbished 1887 Steinway concert grand, the instrument known to have been the favorite piano of Johannes Brahms.
